Who makes Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove?

All three are brands of Sub-Zero Group, Inc., a family-owned manufacturer based in Madison, Wisconsin. Sub-Zero covers refrigeration, Wolf covers cooking, and Cove covers dishwashers. Because they come from one manufacturer, a kitchen often has a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a Wolf range side by side — and one service visit can cover both.

Is Viking the same company as Sub-Zero?

No. Viking Range is a separate manufacturer based in Greenwood, Mississippi, and has been part of The Middleby Corporation since 2013. The two brands are often compared because both build professional-grade kitchens, but they share no parts, no service network and no diagnostics.

Sub-Zero or Viking refrigerator — which is better built?

They solve the problem differently. Sub-Zero built its reputation on dual refrigeration — separate sealed systems for the fridge and freezer — and on built-in units designed to sit flush with cabinetry for decades. Viking refrigeration is newer to the market and more often chosen to match an existing Viking cooking suite. In service terms, Sub-Zero units we see are frequently 15–25 years old and worth repairing; Viking refrigeration issues cluster around controls and cooling components.

Do you need different technicians for Sub-Zero, Viking and Wolf?

Different training, yes; different visits, no. Sealed-system refrigeration work requires EPA certification and recovery equipment that has nothing in common with diagnosing a gas ignition circuit. Our technicians carry both skill sets, so a kitchen with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a Wolf range is one appointment, not two.

Are you affiliated with Sub-Zero, Viking or Wolf?

No. We are an independent repair company. We use these brand names only to identify the appliances we service, and we do not claim factory authorization. What we do publish is the actual work: photographed jobs with the symptom, the diagnosis and the part that fixed it.

The brands

Different manufacturers, different failures.

Sub-Zero and Wolf come from one company. Viking is a separate manufacturer entirely. Knowing which is which changes the parts we bring.

Sub-Zero

Sub-Zero Group, Inc. · Madison, Wisconsin · founded 1945

Built-in and integrated refrigeration. Sub-Zero pioneered dual refrigeration — two separate sealed systems so the freezer never dries out the fresh food side — and builds units meant to stay in the same cabinet opening for 20 years or more.

What fails most often

Sealed system and refrigerantThe unit runs constantly and still drifts warm. Requires EPA-certified work — the reason this fault often gets quoted as a replacement fridge.

Condenser and airflowA built-in breathes through a grille at the top. Dust there is the cheapest cause of poor cooling and the easiest to prevent.

Ice makersSlow production or no ice at all, usually the water valve, the module or a frozen fill tube.

Electronic controlsThe board stops calling for cooling while the compressor is perfectly fine — the diagnosis that separates a one-hour job from a major repair.

Viking

Viking Range, LLC · Greenwood, Mississippi · founded 1987 · part of The Middleby Corporation since 2013

The company that brought commercial-style cooking into the home kitchen. Viking builds professional ranges, wall ovens and cooktops, and a refrigeration line usually chosen to match an existing Viking suite.

What fails most often

Ignition and ignitersSlow heating, a gas smell at start-up, burners that will not light. The most common Viking fault we see, and the one worth calling about the same day.

Spark modules and electrodesClicking that continues after the flame catches — or with every knob off. Spills running into the module are the usual cause.

Oven temperatureReaches temperature but drifts during a long bake. Often blamed on the thermostat when the igniter is the real culprit.

Control boardsBehind the burner group, living in the heat coming off it — which is why a twenty-year-old range often has its original valves and its second board.

Wolf

Part of Sub-Zero Group since 2000 · cooking counterpart to Sub-Zero refrigeration

Ranges, wall ovens and cooktops with the signature red knobs. Designed as the cooking half of a Sub-Zero kitchen, which is why the two so often appear in the same room — and in the same service call.

What fails most often

Constant clickingThe spark module sticks in a firing state and keeps sparking whether or not gas is flowing. Worth fixing promptly.

Oven will not heatUsually the control board or the thermostat. The cooktop keeps working, which is the tell that the fault is oven-side.

IgnitersFade rather than fail outright: the oven still works, just slower, until the delay releases gas before it lights.

Cooling fanA noise that gets worse the longer the range runs. The fan keeps heat away from the electronics — leave it and the fan job becomes a board job.

Common question

Sub-Zero or Viking refrigeration?

Asked constantly, and the honest answer depends on what is already in the kitchen.

	Sub-Zero	Viking
Manufacturer	Sub-Zero Group, Madison WI	Viking Range, Greenwood MS (Middleby)
Known for	Dual refrigeration, built-in and integrated units	Commercial-style cooking; refrigeration matched to it
Typical age we service	Frequently 15–25 years, still worth repairing	More often under 15 years
Faults we see most	Sealed system, condenser airflow, ice makers, control boards	Cooling components and electronic controls
Replacement cost factor	Built into cabinetry — replacing means cabinetwork work too	Often freestanding or panel-ready, easier to swap

Practical version: if the refrigerator is a built-in Sub-Zero, repair almost always beats replacement, because replacing it means rebuilding the cabinetry around it. If it is a Viking bought to match a Viking range, the calculation depends on the specific fault — which the diagnostic visit answers before you commit to anything.
